The role of lateral masking and orthographic structure in letter and word recognition.

چکیده
The present experiments evaluated the contribution of orthographic structure and lateral masking in the Pemption of letter, word, and nonword test displays. Performance was tested in a backward recognition masking experiment in which a masking stimulus followed the test display after a variable blank interstimulus interval. In agreement with previous findings across different experiments, wards were recognized better than single letters at short interstimulus intervals, but the opposite was the case at long intervals. Performance on the nonword’s resembled performance on letters at short masking intervals and performance on words at long masking interwls. The quantitative results were described by a processing model that incorporates the effects of.lateral masking and orthographic structure in the dynamic processing of letter strings. Lateral masking tends to lower the potential perceptibility of letters whereas orthographic structure can reduce the uncertainty of the candidate letters in the letter sequence. The present model predicts that the quantitative contribution of each of these processes to performance is critically dependent upon the processing time available before the onset of the masking stimulus.

Visual, orthographic, phonological, and lexical influences in reading.
The fuzzy logical model of perception (FLMP), used as a framework to analyze phenomena in reading, asserts that there are multiple influences on reading performance. Experiments on the dynamic interaction of letter information and orthographic context are presented. Previous results have supported the FLMP over a variety of interactive activation models. These findings indicated that lateral ma...
متن کاملTaxi vs. Taksi: On Orthographic Word Recognition in the Left Ventral Occipitotemporal Cortex
The importance of the left occipitotemporal cortex for visual word processing is highlighted by numerous functional neuroimaging studies, but the precise function of the visual word form area (VWFA) in this brain region is still under debate. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging study varied orthographic familiarity independent from phonological-semantic familiarity by presenting o...
متن کاملThe effects of orthographic neighborhood in reading and laboratory word identification tasks: A review
This paper reviews recent research on the effects of “orthographic neighbors” (i.e., words that can be created by changing one letter of the stimulus item, preserving letter positions, see Coltheart et al., 1977) on reading and laboratory word identification tasks. We begin this paper with a literature review on the two basic “neighborhood” effects (neighborhood size and neighborhood frequency)...
متن کاملTyping Letter Strings Varying in Orthographic
Subjects typed six-letter strings varying in orthographic structure. Lexical status, word frequency, position-sensitive log bigram frequency, and regularity of letter sequencing were systematically varied. Cumulative reaction times (RTs) of the keystrokes were adequately described by a linear function of letter position in the test string. Overall, words were typed faster than nonwords, and reg...
متن کاملPhonological and Associative Inhibition in the Early Stages of English Word Identification: Evidence From Backward Masking
The role of phonological infonnation in English word identification and the activation pattern of phonological and associative dimensions were investigated with a backward-masking paradigm. Mask type (graphemic, homophonic, associative, unrelated word control, and nonletter #-baseline) and target exposure duration were manipulated. Graphemic and homophonic but not associative masks influenced t...
